It did so in particularly spectacular style with an array of Excalibur models showcasing its signature role as the pioneer of contemporary skeleton calibres, while taking this savoir-faire to the next level with an entirely skeletonised Excalibur Spider collection, an all-new automatic skeleton model, as well as the mysterious and intriguing Excalibur Brocéliande ladies’ trilogy. These creations were staged to dramatic effect in a purpose-designed setting that highlighted the unique Roger Dubuis Astral Skeleton concept governing this entire ‘Year of the Astral Skeleton’, as well as in a series of three Astral Dinners punctuating the first three evenings of the SIHH.

The Excalibur collection has come to symbolise the consistently unconventional Roger Dubuis vision of watchmaking, making it the perfect vehicle for exploring bold new skeleton constructions. All the new models feature the unique star-shaped design of Roger Dubuis contemporary skeleton calibres, the Astral Skeleton.

Technical Skeletons made a grand entrance under the code name Excalibur Spider, models in which Roger Dubuis applies its innovative and creative powers to extending skeletonisation beyond the movement to encompass a skeletonised case, flange and hands, while the collection also welcomed the World Premiere Excalibur Spider Skeleton with gem-set rubber bezel.

Another Roger Dubuis trademark speciality was in the spotlight with its Excalibur Automatic Skeletons, the first skeletonised automatic Roger Dubuis movement with open-worked micro-rotor, successfully maintaining the transparency of skeleton-work despite the self-winding train and the micro-rotor, and all the while achieving sufficient winding power.

Last but far from least, ladies were honoured with the Excalibur Brocéliande models evoking the mysterious forest of Arthurian legends – a perfect example of the Roger Dubuis Creative Skeletons. Decorative jewellery elements are cleverly entwined with the skeleton flying tourbillon movement and the dial, and the skeleton inspiration for this ultra-feminine interpretation is drawn from the delicate lattice-work serving to support ivy as it softly and seductively winds its way along walls or fences.

The Roger Dubuis World at the SIHH 2015 was inspired by an eclectic range of sources including fashion, architecture, painting, sculpture and film-making. It embodied a dreamlike fantasy world powerfully evoking the Astral Skeleton theme and its multiple interpretations in nature, art and watchmaking. Visitors had the impression of stepping into a mesmerising galaxy and of sensing the mysteries of the Roger Dubuis ‘stars’: its skeleton calibres.

They also felt as if they were entering a legendary Arthurian forest with spreading branches. The entire intricate and gigantic structure instilled an atmosphere of awed contemplation. Rubber met metal, the integrated display windows recalled the circular shape of timepiece dial, while curves and powerful lines reflected the roundness of an eye opening and shutting like a window onto very the soul of horology.

Reinforcing the effect of the décor serving as a scenic backdrop for the newly released creations, Roger Dubuis was delighted to offer visitors the unique Astral Skeleton Experience. Donning Oculus Rift glasses gave them a chance to enjoy a unique sensorial 3D virtual reality experience at the heart of the Roger Dubuis World. A world premiere in the watch industry, this fantastic journey sent them hurtling through space as if on a magical roller-coaster, with the branches of the symbolic tree serving as rails.
