Urwerk – UR-105M

Urwerk UR-105M 2014

The URWERK UR-105M: An iron knight ready to conquer time

Geneva, April 2014

URWERK’s UR-105M is inspired by the Middle Ages, an era of lances, legends, chivalrous conduct and noble deeds. An era when knights in shining armor would risk their lives for honor and glory, with only their faith and shield for protection. The UR-105M embodies their gallant valor in a titanium and steel arena, the satellite hours conquering time in an eternal jousting tournament.

All of URWERK's iconic codes are present in the UR-105M. Satellite hours gliding slowly along the minute scale, darkened over-sized crown at 12 o’clock and a subtle technical feel. The UR-105M features an impressive titanium body reinforced by steel armor. At the heart of its time display four satellites slowly orbit. Each of these satellites is visible during their 60-minute journey along the minute scale.

A circular PEEK (PolyEtherEthercetone) canopy with openings enhances the current hour. Once the hour has elapsed, the satellite – guided by a Geneva cross – rotates and continues around its orbit for another three hours before returning to the center stage. Completing the indications, running seconds and power reserve are displayed laterally on the case band.

At the back of the UR-105M, URWERK’s signature ‘Control Board’ houses additional displays and functions: an ‘Oil Change’ indicator alerting when it is time for a service; 42-hour power reserve indicator; plus the fine-tuning screw allowing adjustment of the rate.

Martin Frei, URWERK’s co-founder and artistic director, explains: “The case of UR-105M was developed as an armor. The visible screws on the bezel not only bring a distinctive esthetic to the watch, but also tack the steel armor onto its titanium body. This shield protects the movement (the heart of the watch) from the outside world’s aggressions. For me, the parallel with the chivalrous imagery is obvious. You have the power of the bezel-armor generating a feeling of invincibility.”

“With UR-105M, we’re not trying to show off, but rather ignite a calmer and mellower dimension,” adds Felix Baumgartner, URWERK’s co-founder and master watchmaker. “We offer an intuitive time display, with playfully ergonomic time setting. Technical challenge is at the heart of all our creations, and the performance here is subtle.

“First of all, the aluminum and PEEK structure has to rotate with absolute chronometric precision.

We needed the lightest materials to achieve a high level of precision and PEEK was ideal: The PEEK polymer is used in surgery because its excellent mechanical properties and chemical resistance.

The other challenge accomplished by UR-105M is of another type entirely: A honeycomb seconds disk on the right side of the case underneath the minute dial indicates the passing of each 10 seconds. This indicator is synchronized to another seconds indicator situated on the side of the case.”

The UR-105M is available in two versions: the ‘Iron Knight’ with a titanium case and steel bezel and the ‘Dark Knight’ with a titanium case and AITiN-treated steel bezel.

HAMILTON – Khaki Takeoff Limited Edition

HAMILTON KHAKI Takeoff Chronograph Limited Edition NEW

Hamilton has unveiled a new limited edition pilots’ watch inspired by its aviation history, the Hamilton Khaki Takeoff Auto Chrono.

The watch, which has a black PVD case, takes its design cues from an elapsed-time clock that Hamilton produced during World War II.

The Hamilton Khaki Takeoff Auto Chrono Limited Edition is distinguished not only by the dashboard-clock aesthetic of its dial but by its detachable design: the watch can be easily removed from its black leather strap and installed in a special wooden presentation box with printed aviation references such “No Step” and “Pull to Open.” While the watch is in the presentation box, it resembles its World-War II-era predecessor, which was at the time considered the most complicated aircraft clock.

This contemporary Hamilton pilots’ watch is equipped with a bidirectional turning reflector and flange, driven by the bezel, which can be used for a countdown. Another simple turning action is used to separate the 46.3-mm case, made of stainless steel and coated with black PVD, from its strap, which has a structured rubber lining and can be stowed at the bottom of the presentation box when not in use. The box’s surface has visible aluminum rivets and plates as well as four contemporary “instruments” to complement the watch and complete the instrument panel look; Hamilton refers to the whole ensemble as a “portable cockpit.”

The Hamilton Khaki Takeoff Auto Chrono Limited Edition contains Hamilton’s proprietary H-31 caliber, with chronograph functions and 60-hour power reserve.

The predominantly black dial has contrasting yellow details, and the hour markers are coated with Super-LumiNova. The hands are in the classical pilots’-watch style and the central chronograph hand is tipped with an airplane-shaped pointer. In another nod to historical timekeepers, the crown is positioned at 12 o’clock, with the chrono pushers on either side. The watch is limited to 1,999 numbered pieces.

Girard-Perregaux – Sea Hawk Cobalt Blue Dial

GIRARD-PERREGAUX Sea Hawk Cobalt Blue Dial NEW

The new Sea Hawk takes a bold stance with its vivid hues. Cobalt blue and coral orange are the colors chosen for the dial, the hands and the unidirectional bezel of this diver's instrument offers cutting-edge performance in a sporty style.

Click on the mouse wheel to see the large size ...   BIG FOTO

The Sea Hawk maintains the technical and visual characteristics that have made this line, updated in 2012, so successful. The cobalt blue of the dial and strap give the timepiece its nautical hue, while the minute and second hands and the power reserve indicator are picked out in orange, the same shade that highlights the first 15 minutes of a dive time on the bezel.

The dial features a raised "honeycomb" motif. The three-dimensional hour markers are coated on the top side with a luminescent substance guaranteeing readability in darkness. A sloping flange, graduated with the minute scale, forms an aesthetic link between dial and case. The date at 2 o'clock, visible through an aperture with polished sides, plays with the appearance of asymmetry.

The power reserve indicator stands out clearly at 6 o'clock - an area in orange showing the point at which the movement must be rewound - and the small second is positioned at 10 o'clock. The hands are covered with a luminescent material and can be read perfectly in darkness.  The rotating unidirectional bezel encircling the sapphire crystal is designed to track a dive time, its notched edge making it easily adjustable.

Strength and protection

The case, manufactured from stainless steel, boasts state-of-the-art technology and acclaimed watchmaking expertise as a guarantor of superior performance. It comprises several faceted surfaces with a subtle satin finish. A screw-down black rubber crown is set into a protrusion at 4 o'clock, providing reinforced protection against external impact. The watch has a diameter of 44 mm, a thickness of 17.1 mm and incorporates 38 elements.

Guaranteed water-resistant up to a depth of 1,000 meters, it meets the requirements set by the international standard ISO 6425 for diving watches. In addition, a helium valve ensures the air pressure between the watch's interior, and its exterior environment is rebalanced after deep-water diving expeditions.  The strap is made of rubber, expressly colored cobalt blue, and fitted with a folding steel safety buckle.

EDOX – Hydro Sub North Pole Edition

EDOX Hydro Sub "North Pole"49 mm Limited Edition 2014

Launched in 1965, the Edox Hydro Sub was an ultra-tough diver’s watch that was water-resistant to an incredible, for the time, 500m.

Now nearly 50 years later, Swiss watch maker Edox has brought this legend of the deep back to play a special part in a unique North Pole challenge and to mark the company’s 130th anniversary in 2014. Limited to 350 pieces worldwide, the Edox Hydro Sub North Pole Limited Edition will be the official timepiece of an expedition by champion free diver Christian Redl and Australian photographer Markus Fillinger to the geographic North Pole in February 2015.

The pair will trek from northern Canada through extreme conditions (temperatures down to -40C) to the Pole where Redl will make the first-ever free dive - without breathing gear - under the ice cap. Redl will wear the Hydro Sub during the mission and on his historic plunge into the frigid waters.

The Hydro Sub will play a vital part in the mission; like its 1965 predecessor it is water-resistant to 500m but this model also has a unique moveable crown protector to shield the crown from the extreme conditions Redl and Fillinger will encounter.

The 49 mm watch has an officially certified Swiss automatic chronometer movement at its heart and the caseback will be specially engraved to mark the North Pole mission.

The Hydro Sub comes with a metal bracelet but also a collector’s box housing an additional orange and water-resistant leather strap and tool to change the bracelet.

The Hydro Sub pays testament to Edox’s expertise in superbly engineered and highly water-resistant timepieces, a heritage began in 1961 with the launch of the revolutionary Delfin, water-resistant to 200 m thanks to its cutting edge double-crown gasket, double caseback and extra shock proofing.

The 2015 North Pole expedition is the supreme test for man and mamachine, just the sort of challenge that fits the ethos of the Les Genevez - based Edox. To celebrate its 130th anniversary, Edox is releasing special updated editions of several of its most influential timepieces; the Hydro Sub, the Les Bemonts Open Vision Automatic and the revolutionary 1970s World Timer watch, the Geoscope.
